摘要

The authors of the New Testament widely applied typology as a way of interpreting the Old Testament events, characters, and institutions to claim their escalated repetition and fulfillment. This study analyses the use of typology by Matthew in his Missionary Discourse and its prologue. The material in Matthew 9:35 – 11:1 provides six examples of such a use of the OT. These cases have been mostly overlooked until now because they are allusions, while Matthean scholarship seems to concentrate on the study of (formula) quotations. The exegetical study of these six passages in Matthew and their OT counterparts provides arguments which help to improve the understanding of typological interpretation in two main areas: (1) It suggests that typology is contextual method of reading Scriptures, since in these cases the evangelist’s application of OT shows respect to the original context and meaning. (2) It shows Matthew’s theological underpinnings of this method which seem to differ slightly from later standards of Patristic literature. Matthew’s typology in chapter 10 appears to be more ecclesiological than Christological as it is focused mainly on the fulfilment realized in the group of the Twelve.
