Description of project aims
SeaTEC is a research programme investigating the atmospheric conditions under which offshore environmental measurements can be considered representative and reliable.
The programme originated from studies of offshore methane quantification, where different measurement methods frequently produced substantially different estimates for the same facility. Current research focuses on understanding how atmospheric structure within the marine boundary layer influences measurement validity, transport, and quantification.
Recent work has demonstrated that offshore methane quantification may be strongly dependent on atmospheric conditions rather than measurement technology alone. Ongoing research aims to develop Offshore Atmospheric Regime Classes (OARs), a framework for characterising offshore atmospheric conditions and evaluating their implications for environmental measurements.
Longer-term objectives include the development of validation frameworks, transport modelling approaches, and experimental methodologies for offshore atmospheric measurements.

Layman's description
How do you know whether an offshore environmental measurement can be trusted?
SeaTEC investigates how weather and atmospheric conditions above the ocean affect environmental measurements. Offshore methane measurements are increasingly used by industry and regulators, but different measurement methods often produce very different answers.
The programme seeks to understand whether these differences arise because measurements are being made under atmospheric conditions that are unsuitable for reliable quantification. By identifying recurring offshore weather patterns and understanding how they influence gas transport, SeaTEC aims to provide a scientific basis for determining when offshore measurements are representative and when caution is required.
