SATE II – UKRI Future Flight Challenge Phase II

The Sustainable Aviation Test Environment II (SATE II) project is an extension of the pioneering SATE initiative, aiming to advance sustainable aviation technologies and their integration into regional air transport. Commencing in October 2021 under the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Future Flight Challenge Phase II, SATE II involves collaboration with 11 partners from academia, industry, and government.

Objectives of SATE II:

Operational Demonstrations:

Conduct real-world flight trials using electric, hybrid, and hydrogen-powered aircraft.
Validate the feasibility and efficiency of sustainable aviation technologies in regional settings, particularly in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.
Infrastructure Development:

Establish necessary infrastructure such as charging stations and hydrogen refueling facilities.
Integrate renewable energy sources to support aviation technologies.
Regulatory Advancement:

Work with aviation authorities to address airspace management, safety standards, and certification processes.
Develop regulatory frameworks to accommodate new technologies.
Community Engagement:

Collaborate with local communities to assess social, economic, and environmental impacts.
Ensure that developments meet regional needs and gain public support.
