Description of project aims

Malcolm Innes, Director of UHI’s Centre for Island Creativity, was responsible for setting up this ambitious project with the National Trust for Scotland and worked closely with the NTS team at Brodie Castle to design and deliver the creative lighting and projection for the event.

Created as part of Scotland’s Year of Stories, Brodie Illuminated explores the narratives of the Brodie family through the extensive collection of family portraits and other paintings from the NTS collection at the castle.

Malcolm also brought in storyteller Bob Pegg to provide a series of short stories with music that are replayed around the 1.5km route through the landscaped estate and gardens.

This project is one of a series of light art and projection projects over many years that Malcolm has completed for clients such as National Trust for Scotland, Forestry Commission Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland, Dunbar Science Festival, and the multi-award-winning Botanic Lights project for Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh.

In addition to large scale temporary events such as Brodie Illuminated, Malcolm is also currently working with the Scottish Flag Trust on a Scottish Funding Council Innovation Voucher to develop an innovative permanent projection installation for the Flag Trust’s tiny doocot visitor centre in Athelstaneford, East Lothian.
