The King of Jigs: A Portrait of a 20th Century South Uist Piper

活动: Oral presentation

Description

South Uist’s reputation for excellent pipers flourished in the 20th century and one of the best of them was Angus MacDonald of Milton (Aonghas Beag Mac Dhòmhnaill ‘ic Fhearghais, 1899-1968). Through him and his music, we can begin to understand more clearly the role of the community piper during a pivotal era in the Island’s piping history; between the ear-learned pipers of his father’s generation and the decline of the pipes as the de-facto musical instrument at community dances following the Second World War. In this seminar, the presenter will also attempt to offer insight into Angus’ jig playing that earned him the epithet, ‘The King of Jigs’, using recorded and live musical examples.
