‘ “Our Heilanmen’: assimilating others into early modern Scotland through performance.’

活动: Invited talk

Description

Performance as play, ritual and repetition is critical concept applied to some early modern events and texts, where the Stuart monarchy is concerned with defining an emerging sense of the nation state, both in terms of assimilation and exclusion of others. These events are James IV’s 1507/08 tournament of The Black Knight and the Black Lady’, Mary Queen of Scot’s festival celebrating the christening of James VI in 1566, and writings by or sponsored by James VI/I, specifically Daemonologie (1597), Newes from Scotland (1591), and A Counterblaste Against Tobacco (1604).
