Resumo

The Daily Mile (DM) is a Scottish Government backed initiative to introduce physical activity within the school day. Each day children are asked to run or walk one mile (approx. 15 minutes) at a time convenient to the class schedule. Anecdotally this initiative is associated with improved health and wellbeing, behaviour and attainment.
As part of the BSc Nursing curriculum we introduced the DM concept launching The Undergraduate Mile a Day (TUMAD) on 6th September 2016 to the University of Stirling and recruited student ambassadors to lead walks at various times of the day.
The evaluation conducted on December 2016- on day 101 of TUMAD demonstrated how two thirds of student nurses walk a mile most days and they report they find it beneficial for both their emotional and physical well-being.
After one year of TUMAD these same students 68% reported undertaking TUMAD in the last week (81 of the 103 students, 79% completed the evaluation).Of these 56% had walked a mile a day 4 or more times , and 47% has walked 2 or 3 times every week, reporting the same benefits of TUMAD.
This initiative was shortlisted for the Teaching Innovation of the Year by the Student Nursing Times and has now been launched in September 2017 at the University of the Highlands and Islands in its first cohort of BSc Nursing students.
