N2 - This paper explores the use of Electromagnetic Radiation as an alternative to combustion in Scramjet-like hypersonic engines. The radiation is absorbed by the flow, heating it and thereby providing an alternative to the heat derived from combustion in the Scramjet. The advantages and disadvantages of this system are explored and theoretical results are presented illustrating typical radiation pathlengths at different frequencies. Suggestions for further theoretical and practical work are also made.
