Description
In this presentation Roxane Permar frames her practice in relation to landscape as a critical and social space, exploring social landscapes, ‘knitted’ and ‘illuminated’ through community-based projects in Shetland, and landscapes of trauma and crisis as in the nuclear landscapes of her collaboration, Cold War Projects, and Landscape in Pain, her response to the industrialisation of Shetland. Her work interrogates issues linked to societal threats, making the invisible visible, highlighting the urgency of the nuclear threat and climate crisis while recognising geopolitical and community consequences, the human and environmental impact and the fears these can cause. She asks if we can leverage renewable energies, without causing harm or maximise the social and economic opportunities of climate action, while minimising and carefully managing challenges – including through effective social dialogue among those who are impacted.Roxane Permar is a visual artist based in Shetland (Scotland) where she is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Island Creativity, University of the Highlands and Islands. Her practice is relational. She works with people through creative engagement, participation and collaboration, and her projects are often inter-generational and cross-cultural. Her work spans the northern and Arctic regions through the geopolitical consequences of contemporary societal threats. www.roxanepermar.com
