Research expertise

My research lies primarily in the field of social art practice. I work in collaboration with the artist Susan Timmins, who is also based in Shetland, as well as other artists, community members and specialists from other disciplines. We are investigating the legacy of the Cold War period as it exists physically in the landscape and in memory, encouraging a different understanding of the remote North through a consideration of the experience and impact of the Cold War on northern and Arctic communities. We employ a combination of art practices, fusing new technologies with traditional materials to re-imagine this period while chronicling lost stories in order to give them new meaning within our 21st century landscape of conflict and reconciliation

Currently our research aims to:

  • use art to re-imagine the Cold War period and ask how the presence of Cold War military installations impact on populations both past and present;
  • facilitate the excavation of hidden memories;
  • stimulate new understanding of our nuclear futures;
  • connect communities that hosted military operations during the Cold War period.
