Research expertise

I joined ERI as a PhD research student in 2013, completing this in 2017. I am currently emplolyed as a research technician assisting with a variety of internal projects and helping with commercial work, and am the module leader for a second year undergraduate course (Earth and soil processes). Prior to joining ERI I spent over five years at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh working in the herbarium on the 'Global Types Initiative' to digitise all the type specimens held there (see http://www.rbge.org.uk/science/herbarium/digitisation-of-collections for more information). I also completed my MSc in 'Biodiversity and taxonomy of plants' during this time.

My PhD research was investigating the potential of returning native vegetation to the Dounreay nuclear site on the north coast of Scotland. This included surveys of native vegetation on reference sites, testing potential materials for inclusion in restoration layers - comparing refernce site soils and potential materials (using the AQ2 discrete nutrient analyser and ICP-OES), assessing return of ecological functionality using pitfall traps for comparing invertebrate numbers between reference sites and trial plots (comprised of potential materials), and testing projected plant species distributions - important as part of the site may be exclosed for up to 300 years.
