Teaching expertise

Anna-Wendy is the Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Applied Music and lectures on the MA Music and the Environment. 

As Programme Leader for Applied Music,  Anna-Wendy has led the development, curriculum design and delivery of the degree through to the re-approval in March 2016 at which the degree was highly commended for the ‘national and international engagement made possible by the residencies’.  Anna-Wendy is module leader and tutor for 7 modules including all the performance related activity on the degree and has led in the design and delivery of four 3-5 day intensive residential placements each academic year.  She was awarded UHI HISA ‘Most engaging Video Conference Lecturer 2016’.  Her research focus spans the pedagogy surrounding blended learning on a networked, multi-genre and practical based degree programme to professional engagement through performance practice and composition. 

Services expertise

A fiddler and composer, specialising in Scottish traditional music, Anna-Wendy has toured the world as a performer and teaching working with a range of artists and community groups.  She has written music for film, theare, animation, TV and Royal Conservatoire exam boards.   In 2011, her Celtic Connections Festival commission, 'My Edinburgh' was nominated for a BBC MG Alba award 'composer of the Year'.  Anna-Wendy has produced several albums and recorded on over 35, working with many artists from different genres including her late grandfather, composer and pianist Ronald Stevenson.  She has directed for several TV shows adn documentaires including BBC Itrad and BBC Christmas service which featured her students from Benecula.  She was nominated 'music teacher of hte year' for the Scottish Music Industry Awards in 2011.  Touring the British Isles with Live Music Now!, Anna-Wendy worked with people with special needs and in so doing developed a deep understanding of the value and relationship between music and health and wellbeing.  Prior to a professional music career, Anna-Wendy worked for the BBC as a researcher in teh music department of Radio Scotland.  She regularly performs with her husband, fiddler and composer Simon Bradley, and together they are based in Uist in the Outer Hebrides.

With Soundstorm Music Education Agency, Anna-Wendy has developed the Far Flung Collective - an ongoing research project focusing on creation of new artistic work informed by engagement with communities, environment and culture of remote locations.

With the Fuaran Project, Anna-Wendy has developed a range of research and performance opportunities through joint partnership with the Feisean nan Gaidheal including international performances and workshops at Celtic Colours Festival in Canada, Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow.

For the Multi Media Gaelic Education Unit, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council), funded by Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Stòras Uibhist she has coordinated and delivered the new Gaelic early years education online app which consists of 20 Gaelic songs accompanied by animation.

Anna-Wendy is a member of the University of the Highlands and Islands Music Research Group, the Humanities Arts and Research Cluster, the Learning and Teaching Academy and has presented at several conferences on pedagogy, blended learning, quality assurance and on Exploring the proximity and focus of research and teaching on Music and the Environment –Gaelic culture, identity and language.
