Research expertise

Dr Andrew Treweeke is a Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist currently working as a Postdoctoral Fellow, with active research interests in the areas of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and physical activity in health. He has three decades of experience, working in both clinical and research haematology laboratories and more recently in the Free Radical Research Facility at the University of the Highlands and Islands in Inverness. Prior to joining UHI, his research had focussed on normal leukocyte function, particularly neutrophil interaction with platelets, angiogenesis and signalling in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, and the anti-inflammatory properties of activated protein C in severe sepsis.

Dr Treweeke has published 13 peer-reviewed original research papers and presented work at national and international conferences. He has participated in ~15 collaborations with industry in the past few years involving marine biotechnology, drug development, and food and drink additives.

After graduating with a degree in Sport Science, Dr Treweeke continued to maintain a personal interest in sport and exercise physiology research, which has evolved into a strong interest in the role of physical activity in health. He actively participates in endurance and ultra-endurance running events and is a member of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences. With a background in biological sciences and an interest in sport science, Dr Treweeke is distinctively placed for the future development of the physical activity research interests of the School of Health at UHI.
