Résumé
This Chapter drawing on European experiences of rural demographic changes and migration is located in the context of discourses on Japan¿s Shrinking Regions in the 21st Century with a view to understanding the overall narrative of Japan¿s depopulation and its place within the trajectory of world development. It identifies both similar experiences with regard to rural demographic change in Europe and Japan as well as the divergent strategies for addressing the challenges arising from population changes at local levels to provide a narrative of Japan's shrinking population.
