Résumé

The Looking in From the Edge (LIFTE) project conducted a Desk-based Assessment (DBA) and targeted coastal walkover survey in Deer Sound, East Mainland / Deerness, Orkney. Using a system of criteria to assess relevance to the research aims of the project, the DBA identified 112 historic environment records, both terrestrial and maritime, which were of interest to LIFTE. Based on the findings of the assessment, a section of the eastern shore of Deer Sound, measuring approximately 4km long, was targeted for coastal walkover survey.
Six of the sites identified in the DBA were visited during the coastal walkover survey. Additionally, the coastal walkover survey identified three previously unrecorded archaeological features, including evidence for cloth processing. This report presents the findings of the both the DBA and survey and discusses them in relation to the research aims of LIFTE.
