So far we have argued that dolmens as the first composite megalithic architecture in the early Neolithic of north-western and northern Europe were both qualitatively and quantitatively different from anything that had gone before and were therefore extraordinary monumental edifices of display. To demonstrate this we have in each of the previous chapters ‘excavated’ dolmens in a different way and slowly – layer by layer – exposed their extraordinary qualities and unique characteristics.
