Tombs of the Isles

The Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA), UHI Archaeology institute, is undertaking a 2.5 year project celebrating, researching and sharing the stories of the Neolithic tombs of the North Isles of Orkney. A community focused activities programme of research, walks, arts workshops, archaeological fieldwork (survey, geophysics) and schools workshops will explore the well-known and lesser known burial monuments, and set them in a wider context. This will result in island specific ‘tomb archives’ and new fieldwork which will feed into the creation of a new digital atlas. New 3D models of tombs will be hosted online for heritage centres and schools. Other activities will include public talks, training workshops (e.g. research, field techniques), creative workshops (e.g. rock art) and a short course on Neolithic archaeology. In all, the project will bring together what we know about the tombs of the isles, undertake new
research, and create new ways of sharing their stories.
