Resumen
Using a wide selection of historical and folkloric evidence, in tandem with different international scholarly interpretive frameworks, this article investigates the early modern origins of a purportedly supernatural phenomenon regarded internationally as emblematic of the Scottish Highlands, integrating it for the first time in its broader Scottish, British, and European contexts.
