Description of project aims
The main aim of the project was to address the bottleneck of bulking gametophytes of Alaria esculenta, one of the commercially grown seaweed species in the UK, in the nursery with the following objectives:
O1) To develop an automated method of sorting algal spores using flow cytometry,
O2) To optimize nursery conditions for long-term maintenance and bulking of male and female gametophytes in a seaweed nursery,
O3) To determine subculturing and fragmentation frequency for obtaining a desired quantifiable upscaled biomass.
