This interdisciplinary panel considered how art and social based practices can help young people in the North deal with issues that threaten society, such as climate change, environmental pollution, and contamination from plastics. Industrialisation of natural resources such as fish farming and new forms of colonisation involving the industrial scale extraction of nature for export and profit, as in wind power, disrupt our relation to land as well as impacting cultural heritage and identity.
The premise for this panel is based on the belief that creativity is essential for sustainable development (D'Orville 2019), and that the arts can create impact and achieve societal change by offering imaginative approaches to the complex issues affecting our society. The environmental, social, cultural, and economic changes occurring in the North are charged with far reaching geopolitical consequences alongside human and environmental impact that require young people’s voices.
