Abstract

Excavation ahead of the M74 road development was undertaken at a cairnfield and other settlement remains at Fall Knees end. The project was funded by the National Roads Directorate of the Scottish Office Development Department and managed on their behalf by Historic Scotland. The remains of a cremation pyre were found beneath one of the cairns, and an early Bronze Age radiocarbon date was obtained from this deposit. Later buildings placed among the cairn field were excavated and are thought to have been associated with shieling activity.
