    Abstract

Title: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, the use of water in labour
Aim: To explore how we can learn from the choices of women, and the need for practice to be rooted in evidence
    Design: On-going prospective exploratory study
Method: Qualitative data collected for all women using a purpose built pool in Raigmore hospital , Inverness from September 1997 to December 2007.
Result: 10 years of pool use in Raigmore will be presented within the context of developments in practice in NHS Highland, Scotland and the United Kingdom.
Conclusion: The choices of women often provide a catalyst for practice developments. The evidence for theses developments is not always clear. Providing midwifery care informed by evidence is part of the present and future challenges for midwives.
