Abstract
In situ rates of phytoplankton production and nitrogen assimilation
were measured at five stations in the region of the plume of the
River Rhone. Onshore gradients of increasing production and nitrogen
assimilation were observed, with the highest rates found at the
immediate mouth of the river. At this site ammonium assimilation
appeared to support the majority of the nitrogen requirement. At all
sites, organisms < 5μπι diameter contributed to a significant
proportion of the primary production and nitrogen assimilation
rates; eg up to 75% in the most offshore sites and up to 50% at the
nearshore sites. Various 'nutritional status indices' suggested that
the production over much of the area was slightly nitrogen limited.
A crude estimate of the influence of the Rhone suggests that
production was elevated approximately 2 fold over the entire study
area, and up to 4 fold in the immediate mouth.
