Mixing in the sea is traditionally described by a diffusion equation. The first section introduces this approach, and summarises some results. An Alternative statistical method of describing mixing is suggested in the second section and some results are given for different restrictions on discrete jumps. Finally the third section argues that the statistical approach is probably more realistic than the diffusion equation in describing medium scale mixing.
