Abstract

Jan Mayen Island has featured in European scientific research since the first International Polar Year. Currently, Europe is funding a considerable number of national and international research programmes in the Arctic. Research on Jan Mayen Island and in surrounding waters, has the potential to contribute to long term monitoring and assessment of environmental change, as well as focussing on specific process studies. The current state of international and European funding is reviewed, together with some suggestions on the way forward for the island as an environmental observatory.
