Abstract

Donald Ferguson of Lochboisdale was the preeminent merchant in South Uist and one of the richest unlanded Gaels residing in nineteenth century Western Isles. The article traces his engagement with the lucrative herring, cod and ling fisheries in Uist and Barra, where he made his first significant income.
