Abstract
This book examines the circumstances of the Gaeltacht and the Irish language in the 20th and 21st centuries. Given the current language crisis in the Gaeltacht, the authors propose a new language planning agenda and suggest a radical set of measures to enhance Gaeltacht and Irish sustainability.
The authors contend that the status quo is not working for the Gaeltacht and set out an alternative approach in this book. The four central initiatives proposed are:
• Irish linguistic zones
• Community Trusts for the Gaels
• Assembly for the Gaels
• Academy for the Gaels.
The innovative analysis and proposals in the book set out a positive and productive agenda for the Gaelic community and minority language development.
