Abstract
This bilingual book is a linguistic analysis of 358 village names in the Isle of Lewis. Volume I looks at various aspects of the settlement names: their word order, how they function as names, their different levels of meaning, changes in their form, and the development from Old Norse to Gaelic. Volume II deals with the derivation of individual names from Old Gaelic, Old Norse or from Scots or English, and includes an appendix on the island name itself.
