Abstract
Through the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body Gaelic Language Plan, the Scottish Parliament has a commitment to deliver education services and resources in Gaelic. The Scottish Parliament Education Service produce resources to help teachers learn or teach about democracy and the Scottish Parliament,
and have a range of Gaelic resources on their Education web pages. Sabhal Mòr Ostaig (SMO) was employed by the Scottish Parliament Education Service to find out how effective the Scottish Parliament Education Service’s current provision is for Gaelic education and how their services and resources could
be developed to support teachers in Gaelic education.
An online bilingual questionnaire was created and then shared with teachers in Gaelic education and they were asked for their views on the current resources and provision, as well as what resources and provision would be useful in the future. As a result of the responses received in the questionnaire, a
number of recommendations are made in this report in regard to how the Scottish Parliament Education Service develops and delivers resources and education sessions within Gaelic education.
Recommendations include the need to raise awareness of the resources and education sessions amongst Gaelic teachers, the need to be aware of the language needs of pupils in Gaelic education when planning
and developing resources, and the request for resources that relate specifically to Gaelic. Recommendations also include the use of videos as a useful resource, and suggestions for how the resources should be presented on the Scottish Parliament website. Finally, recommendations are also made in regard to professional learning for teachers, with suggestions for future resource development and education sessions.
