Whisky cask cooperage biochar and its potential use within a circular economy

Project Details

Description of project aims

This project investigates the valorisation of waste biochar generated during whisky cask recharring at Whyte & Mackay’s Invergordon Distillery, supporting the company’s ambition to achieve zero waste to landfill. Building on previous collaborative research with ERI-UHI, the project characterises the biochar and evaluates alternative applications and reuse pathways, including its potential as an additive and environmental remediation material, supporting more sustainable and circular practices within the whisky industry.
