Biochar synthesis and functionalisation for highly efficient and selective nutrient (P and N) removal/recovery

Project Details

Description of project aims

This project investigates the conversion of waste conifer brash from Scottish peatland restoration into biochar for sustainable nutrient management. The resulting biochar is evaluated as a low-cost filtration material for capturing and recovering phosphorus and nitrogen from wastewater, with potential reuse as a nutrient-rich soil amendment. The project also explores its application in peatland restoration to reduce nutrient leaching, supporting waste valorisation, resource recovery and the transition towards a circular economy.
