Personal profile

Research expertise

Since completing my Ph.D on Marine Intertidal Ecology in 2006, I have gained additional experience in marine surveying, geoacoustics, habitat/biotope mapping, invasive non-native species, and fisheries. Much of my research to date has strong links with local industry as well as nature conservation bodies. I have extensive working experience with multibeam surveying, sub-bottom profiling, underwater video surveys using both fixed camera systems and ROVs, and sediment sampling and have an in-depth working knowledge of several specific software packages including GIS, SonarWiz, SieSee, and Primer. I have an IOSH Managing Safely qualification and am a qualified JNCC Marine Mammal Observer.  I also manage, analyse, and map both AIS and VMS data with particular reference to vessel density and routing information.

Research interests and skills: Spatial and temporal variation of marine species, habitats, and vessel activity; GIS and mapping; Fisheries interactions with the environment; Marine ecology; Environmental monitoring; Species identification; Marine survey techniques and planning; Data analysis and processing.
