Personal profile

Research links

I am a Knowledge Exchange (KE) Fellow for Wave and Tidal Energy, currently tasked with increasing the uptake of environmental research by industry, regulators, and policymakers. My recent projects are focused on the exchange of best practices for environmental survey and monitoring across several European tidal energy sites and developing research collaborations between scientists, industry, and other partners.

I am a strong believer in the promotion of science beyond the classroom, and to a wider audience, and I frequently participate in workshops to engage school children in marine science. I am also a trained STEM ambassador for the North of Scotland.

Research expertise

My principal research interests concern the processes by which anthropogenic impacts on the sea influence the physical environment, mediating changes in species biogeography, habitat provisioning and biodiversity. More specifically,  my work focusses on benthic ecology, where my interests lie in understanding how artificial structures such as renewable energy devices alter the availability of benthic habitats in the marine environment, and the mechanisms by which this influences wider ecosystem functioning. Moving forward, I’m looking to embed the outcomes of this work into industrial systems and work flows in the renewable energy, and other marine sectors.

I am also a keen advocate of public engagement with science and actively collaborate with schools, develops activities for festivals, and deliver public lectures to develop an ongoing dialogue around renewable energy and marine science with a wider audience.
