Personal profile

Research Interests

My research falls into several related categories. Firstly, I am still influenced by the research undertaken during my PhD entitled "Negotiating the Frontier: Landholding and Society in the Anglo-Scottish Border Region, c.1066-c.1250". I am preparing a series of journal articles for submission which have resulted from this research, including an exploration of the cult of Robert, first abbot of Newminster Abbey (b.c.1100-7/6/1159) and articles on charters and diplomatics in Scottish charters of the central middle ages. Secondly, I am inspired by the field of medievalisms, researching widely across early modern and modern perceptions of aspects of the medieval period. I have presented on an extensive range of aspects of the reception of the medieval period: digital medievalisms and tourism, depictions of medievalists and medieval history, regional early modern perspectives on the medieval past, and medievalisms in comedy and satire. I am producing a monograph on the Lives and Afterlives of Finella, lady of the Mearns, as well as working collaboratively with colleagues on other aforementioned medieval projects. Thirdly, as a result of my work on Finella, I have begun to develop a strand of research which explores gender, politics, culture and law in the late medieval narrative accounts of the earlier middle ages. Finally, I am conducting pedagogical research resulting from my extensive expertise as a lecturer at UHI.

Services Expertise

I am a part time lecturer in the Centre for History. I am responsible for teaching and administrating a wide range of medieval, early modern and modern modules. The majority of history modules are delivered via videoconferencing, so I am experienced at the technical and pedagogical challenges associated with this medium.
