I am Programme Leader for Drama courses, Lecturer in Literature and Research Enhancement Lead for Creative Arts and Literature at the University of the Highlands and Islands, Inverness. I sit on the UHI Humanities and Arts Research Cluster steering group, the Creative Industries Knowledge Exchange Group and co-chair the postgraduate applications panel for Arts and Humanities.
My doctoral thesis was undertaken at Strathclyde University and explored Ben Jonson's antimasques. I taught Literature and Drama at the Universities of Strathclyde, Southampton, Northumbria and Glasgow before coming to Inverness. I have published widely on the topic of early modern court festivals and theatre, and currently I am investigating theatrical representations of Scots in at home and abroad for a monograph - the proposal for which has been accepted by the Oxford University Press, Early Modern Literary Geographies series.
A more recent development in my research activity is an ongoing project exploring the applications of Drama in clinical contexts, with an emphasis on palliative care and deroling strategies for professionals. This project has cross sector and international reach, and involves creative practice research, live and digital performances, and an emerging interdisciplinary network.
As Research Facilitator at the School of Arts in Inverness I am in the early stage of developing 'Creativity in the Classroom' - a handbook including case studies to support the teaching of creative subjects in a tertiary education context.
I am Director of Studies for MRes Creative Practice and EcoLiterature students; PhD Literature students, and co-supervise a History PhD.
I am a member of the Royal Studies Network, The Early Modern Festival Network, the Society for Renaissance Studies, The Society for Court Studies, The Theatre and Performance Research Association and The International Federation of Theatre Reasearch.
In 2020 I became a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and a fellow of The Royal Society of Arts.
