Research Interests

Karen is Associate Dean, Education at UHI. Previously she was Head of Initial Teacher Education at Hull, and Deputy Associate Dean, and Subject Group Lead, Education, Stirling. Beginning her career as an English teacher in Scottish Secondary schools, from 2005 Karen has led modules and programmes in ITE and Research Methods at Newcastle, Durham and Strathclyde Universities.

Karen is a socio- and applied linguist. Her research focus is Scots Language in Scottish education, and more broadly minority languages in education contexts, UK and globally, through the lens of social justice. She is interested in a range of methodological approaches, including the application of Critical Discourse Analysis.
