Research expertise

I joined University of the Highlands and Islands as a Mechanical Engineering Lecturer in February 2016.

My research expertise is in small-scale sustainable energy engineering, particularly energy from waste processes such as pyrolysis and gasification. With this I specialise in reactor design and optimisation, process engineering, fuel and product characterisation, and reaction kinetics. I am also interested in micro-hydro and have expertise in the historic engineering of these systems.

Following my PhD at the University of Leeds on steam reforming of urea, and then post-doctoral research in Qatar on solar reactors for methane cracking, I spent three years at the University of Nottingham as Research Fellow on the gasification strand of UK/India EPSRC project Rural Hybrid Energy Enterprise Systems. I have acted as a technical advisor on municipal solid waste gasification for UKWIN, and have managed the restoration and research of the world's last industrial stone grinding water wheel, at Castleford in West Yorkshire.
