Description
Scottish Graduate School for the Arts and Humanities Training Workshop for Doctoral Students in History - 'Universities, Heritage Bodies and Scotland’s Regional Pasts: Evidencing and Transforming from the Highlands and Islands'What are the common themes and challenges facing historians of the Highlands and Islands and of Scotland’s other regional pasts? How might public history in these locations be pursued more collaboratively with the heritage hub and broader heritage sector, and how might the SGSAH History discipline catalysts learn from and inform the work taking place? This event will train doctoral researchers to engage with these questions, drawing on the expertise of the Centre for History, University of the Highlands and Islands, and Dr Martin MacGregor’s Comann-rannsachaidh air Eachdraidh nan Gàidheal ann an Alba / Discussion Group on the History of Gaelic Scotland at Glasgow. It will expand established networks across SGSAH, facilitating ongoing exchanges.
The first part of the day will commence with a discussion around the question: ‘What is the Highlands and Islands?’ This will be followed by a forum focusing on collaboration between HEIs and non-HEIs, from a regional perspective. There will then be a reflection on the perspectives of non-HEI attendees (including representatives of the National Museums of Scotland and Culture Perth and Kinross) on collaborating with academic staff and research students across Scotland.
The second part will involve specific training and guidance sessions in relation to public history in the Highlands and Islands led, respectively, by:
• an academic staff member at the Centre for History reflecting on good practise in engaging with communities, and giving public talks, across Scotland’s north and west
• a Centre for History research student speaking on collaboration and co-curation with a non-HEI in the Highlands and Islands region
• two representatives of High Life Highland - the umbrella organisation responsible for archives, museums and libraries across Highland region - reflecting on their experiences of working with Centre for History staff and research students.
