The presentation, entitled Art, Engagement and the Cold War in Shetland, looked at the strategies for engaging audiences in issues related to the northern and Arctic regions during the Cold War period, approximately 1960 - 1990 with particular reference to the art projects, Countdown and Recount, created in collaboration with Susan Timmins in 2012 and 2013.

The second annual symposium and exhibition organised by the ASAD network. The title of the events, Relate North 2013: Engagement, Art and Representation set out the focus of presentations, keynote lectures and the theme of the related exhibition. RELATE NORTH 2013 posed a series of questions for artists, designers, researchers and academics as a framework for action and creating art: How can art stimulate debate or promote sustainability and engagement with northern and Arctic issues? What role can art play in narrating Nordic issues? How might art describe some of the challenges facing those living in northern areas today?
