More than just a big lump in a field: reflections on geophysical survey over and around brochs in northern Scotland

Activity: Talk / Presentation / Podcast / WebinarOral presentation

Description

The majority of broch sites in Scotland survive solely as large mounds, with occasional visible masonry, and frequently some antiquarian delving but very little evidence upon which to base interpretations of the uses, economy, and significance of these structures.
Surveys on and around more than a dozen broch sites in Orkney and Caithness has highlighted the scope of geophysical techniques, and gradiometery in particular to characterise the nature and form of broch sites themselves. As well as evidence for settlement, and agriculture activity in the surrounding landscape.
