Evaluating secondary entanglement risk of marine megafauna among offshore renewables: a framework approach

Activity: Talk / Presentation / Podcast / WebinarOral presentation

Description

• ‘Secondary entanglement’ refers to marine megafauna becoming entangled in Abandoned, Lost or Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG), or other marine debris (Macfadyen et al. 2009; Farr et al. 2021), which has itself become snagged on marine infrastructure.
• We find that the true risk of ‘secondary entanglement’ in floating offshore wind farms (FOW) is poorly quantified due to lack of data.
• We developed a stepwise framework to evaluate the risks of secondary entanglement in FOW – we hope this framework will provide a useful tool for use in Environmental Risk Assessments and will help focus future research efforts.
