Digital Imaging: Bringing Interactive Media into Social Art Practice

Activity: Talk / Presentation / Podcast / WebinarOral presentation

Description

The Nordic Connections project seeks to expand knowledge about cultural history (specifically the Cold War history of Unst), to help people reimagine that period using augmented reality as there isn't a lot of physical infrastructure left. The project was funded by the Scottish government's Arctic Connection fund, where due to Covid run has been run mainly digitally. The project aims to link communities in Nordic countries, exploring ways to express the importance of societal threats posed by climate change and nuclear disaster (which has become more pertinent due to the Russian war with Ukraine as Norway has a Russian border). Exoanxiety and Solastalgia were explored – a form of emotional distress caused by environmental change (the lived experience of negatively perceived environmental change). The objectives include intergenerational conversations (between school pupils and older generations in Unst, with pupils learning how to interview people and use related technology as part of the project) and international dialogue (via video conference). The project involved the creation of a geodesic dome, a collaborative task which has galvanised people to take part. It shows videos, has audio, images of items etc, collating and presenting a series of experiences and preserving aspects of the past in the form of memories and lived experiences.
