Description

Design Lab #1 was the first of three Design Labs for the project Northern Connections. It employed dialogical and participatory methods for creative engagement that merged art, science and technology.

It took place at the island school, Unøy/Lurøy Skole, in Norway. Teams from three universities, Nord Universitet, University of Lapland and UHI Shetland (Roxane Permar, Siún Carden and PhD student Helen Garbett). The Design Lab supported young people to engage in creative activities, specifically drawing, writing, sculpture and animation to explore themes linked to the local environment, particularly endangered bird species and limpets.

The Design Lab concluded with an an online presentation on the last day with pupils from other schools in the project and an exhibition to share the work produced by the young people with the wider island community which included drawing, printmaking, film and wire and clay sculpture.
