    Description

The ArtWorks Scotland (AWS) Conference offered the exciting opportunity to hear about ArtWorks findings and learning across the UK. Contributors shared perspectives on quality, professional development and knowledge exchange between sectors working within arts in participatory settings. This presentation was one of the short presentations (‘Lightning Learnings’) from artists and organisations about their Artworks Research Projects. The presentation, "Video Conference, Virtual Learning and Participatory Practices", addressed some of the challenges and successes in the research project carried out at University of the Highlands and Islands, Shetland College. This research tested the viability of using networking technologies and virtual learning environments to teach participatory arts practices in the visual arts. The project involved students studying the practice and theory of socially engaged art in new BA and MA modules, each entitled Art and Social Practice, delivered from Shetland to students in three locations in the region. The project developed virtual learning material and new methods of delivery to engage students in small collaborations and social projects in their home communities. The project also included a residential learning lab and an international virtual symposium.
