Abstract

Psalm 87 is something of an outlier within the psalter. It is a Zion psalm but an unusual one even within that subgenre. The song celebrates the belonging of Israel's enemies - both historic an painfully recent - as part of the worshiping community gathered in Jerusalem. It presents an image of ingathering that echoes the voice of the Old Testament prophets but that is almost unheard of within the spiritual vocabulary of the Psalter. This essay discusses the role that Zion played in the mindset of the worshiping community, especially in the postexilic period. It also examines Psalm 87's voice of radical, cross-cultural inclusion and belonging - a voice that serves as a challenge for the people of God in every generation.
