Nerthus f. > Njǫrðr m. : A Speculative Proposal

Publikation: Chapter (peer-reviewed)Begutachtung

Abstract

One of the most enigmatic problems regarding Old Norse mythology is how to
understand the West Scandinavian god Njǫrðr, in the light of the East Scandinavian
goddess(?) Niærþer and a Proto-Germanic goddess Nerthus, mentioned by Tacitus in his Germania (AD c. 98; chap. 40) and which according to him was worshipped by several Germanic tribes, such as the Reudingi, Aviones, Anglii, Varini, Eudoses, Suarini and Nuitones.1 All three names can be derived from a PGmc *Nerþuz.
