Abstract
Problems associated with marine eutrophication are now receiving
increased attention. It is generally concluded that these problems are a
direct result of anthropogenically derived nutrients, primarily nitrogenous
nutrients. In this communication aspects of the sources of nitrogen to the
coastal marine environment are reviewed, with particular emphasis on
their role in promoting 'unusual' algal growth. It is concluded that the
evidence for a simple causal relationship between antropogenie nutrients
and 'unusual' algal growth is contradictory
