Abstract
The stage one debate for the Scottish Languages Bill, on Tuesday 17th September, will consider evidence gathered by the Education, Children and Young People Committee (ECYPC). The draft Bill’s proposed clauses ought to strengthen legislation already enacted through the Gaelic (Scotland) Act 2005. Any new Gaelic-related legislation faces two questions: can it make a difference to the current situation and, if so, how will that difference manifest itself in Gaelic language outcomes in terms of fluency and use?
