Abstract
Exploring the richness and diversity of colloquial Gaelic (generally poorly recorded in the dictionaries) and the emergence of a periodocal press in the late 19th century, a 'linguistic community' can be identified in the huge number of Gaels able to read and write in their own tongue (the product of the Gaelic Schools movement). Drawing on 'material culture' and traditional 'technical' terminology to illustrate the discourse, this serves to demonstrate aspects of shrinking of vocabulary with the disappearance of context within daily life.
