Abstract

Exploration of some gender-specific vocabulary and its contexts of usage through lists of vocabulary submitted for competitions organised by An Comunn Gàidhealach in 1900 and 1901. The criterion was 'technical terminology' as probable response to a national concern for falling standards in scientific and technical education in comparison with the success, for example, in Germany of the Technische Hochschulen, and linked also to the founding of the 'Scottish Home Industries Association.
